Appointed as advisor to Jameel Health in 2020, Lord Ajay Kakkar, is Emeritus Professor of Surgery at University College London, and Director of the Thrombosis Research Institute. He was Professor of Surgery at UCL from 2011-2021 and Chairman of UCL Partners, the Academic Health Science Partnership from 2014-2021. He is also Chair of The King’s Fund.
Lord Kakkar completed his medical degree at King’s College Hospital Medical School, University of London and received his PhD from Imperial College London. His research interests include the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease and cancer associated thrombosis.
Lord Kakkar is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and the Royal College of Physicians (London) and an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has Honorary Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Association of Surgeons of India and Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford.
He is a Trustee of the Foundation for Science and Technology and an Honorary Bencher of the Most Honorable Society of Middle Temple.
Lord Kakkar was created a life peer in 2010, and sits on the crossbenches in the House of Lords. He was Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission from 2013-2018. He is Chairman of the Judicial Appointments Commission and was appointed a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council in 2014.
